GAY PRIDE MONTH; Day Thirty, Pride Music

This past month, during Gay Pride’s Fiftieth Anniversary, I have shared a few of my personal Pride anthems. These included Heather Small’s “Proud”, Johnna’s “Pride” and Gloria Gaynor’s version of “I Am What I Am” from the musical version of La Cage aux Folles. All have wonderful things to say and stir my blood. Others would include “I Will Survive” also by Ms Gaynor, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” by Sylvester, “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge, “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross, “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls, and “Firework” by Katy Perry are just a few more. But one that rises above, for me, is Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” The words are powerful and speak not only to all the “letters” in GLBTQIA+ but also all peoples. She excludes no one!

No matter gay, straight, or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born to be brave

Here is the version I picked out….

And is there anyone who will argue with the fact that Lady Gaga is an amazing and loving ally? She puts her love and her time and her money where her mouth is. She went to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Equality March and at a rally held on the West Lawn of the US Capitol Building, she screamed, “Are you listening?” demanding action from President Obama. “We will continue to push your administration to bring your promise to reality.” She went from wearing haute couture to the infamous raw meat dress to protest against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. She created the Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit committed to “supporting the wellness of young people and empowering them to create a kinder and braver world.” She cried out at WordPride this past weekend. “It is said that those who threw the first brick on that historic night were members of the trans community. And while we have made tremendous progress, we find ourselves at a time where attacks on the trans community are on an increasing rise each day. I will not tolerate this.”

And here is her stunning version, live in Las Vegas….

At WorldPride, she went on to say, “This is a historic day. You should be so, so proud of yourselves. This community has fought—and continued to fight—a war of acceptance, a war of tolerance and the most relentless bravery. You are the definition of courage, do you know that?”

And here are those stirring lyrics from her modern classic, and as far as Elton John is concerned the new ultimate gay anthem….

BORN THIS WAY

It doesn’t matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M
Just put your paws up, ‘cause you were born this way, baby

My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars

She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir

“There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are”
She said, “‘Cause He made you perfect, babe”
“So hold your head up girl and you’ll go far,
Listen to me when I say”

I’m beautiful in my way
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track, Baby, I was born this way
Don’t hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you’re set
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way  (Born this way

Oh, there ain’t no other way
Baby, I was born this way
Baby, I was born this way
Oh, there ain’t no other way
Baby, I was born this way
Right track Baby, I was born this way

Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Don’t be don’t be don’t be

Give yourself prudence
And love your friends
So we can rejoice your truth
In the religion of the insecure
I must be myself, respect my youth

A different lover is not a sin
Believe capital H-I-M (hey hey hey)
I love my life I love this record and
Mi amore vole fe, yah

I’m beautiful in my way
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track, baby

Whether you’re broke or evergreen
You’re black, white, beige, chola descent
You’re Lebanese, you’re Orient
Whether life’s disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
‘Cause, baby you were born this way

No matter gay, straight, or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born to be brave

I’m beautiful in my way

I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way, hey

I was born this way, hey
I was born this way, hey
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way, hey

Same D.N.A., but born this way
Same D.N.A., but born this way….

The fight continues for our rights! We must be ever vigilant! Remember Martin Niemöller famous words….

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

SPEAK OUT!
And Happy Gay Pride!
With must and total love
