GAY PRIDE MONTH; Day Thirty, Pride Music

This past month, during Gay Pride’s Fiftieth Anniversary, I have shared a few of my personal Pride anthems. These included Heather Small’s “Proud”, Johnna’s “Pride” and Gloria Gaynor’s version of “I Am What I Am” from the musical version of La Cage aux Folles. All have wonderful things to say and stir my blood. Others would include “I Will Survive” also by Ms Gaynor, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” by Sylvester, “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge, “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross, “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls, and “Firework” by Katy Perry are just a few more. But one that rises above, for me, is Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” The words are powerful and speak not only to all the “letters” in GLBTQIA+ but also all peoples. She excludes no one!

No matter gay, straight, or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born to be brave

Here is the version I picked out…. Continue reading

GAY PRIDE MONTH; Day Sixteen, Pride Music II

On June 4th, I posted my first Gay Pride anthem. At least it was an anthem for me,and I am betting it was for quite a few other people as well. It comes from the pilot episode of Showtime’s version of Queer As Folk, and it’s Heather Small’s Proud. I love that song! It stirs my heart! It stirs my feelings of self-worth and joy and…pride.

Today’s is quite possibly my favorite Pride song. Sadly it’s difficult to find even a half decent version of the video. I wish I knew why it doesn’t seem to exist. I’ve chosen to give you one of the only half-decent versions because the music is still terrific. And the lyrics are amazing. I love them so much.

I hope you enjoy Johnna’s Pride!

You gotta have Pride
Don’t be ashamed
Our Love is the same

GAY PRIDE MONTH; Day Four, Pride Music

There are a lot of songs out there that we have come to consider gay anthems. “I Will Survive,” “I Am What I Am,” “I’m Coming Out,” and so many others. Songs that stir us, bring tears to our eyes, and make us want to stand up and pump our fists and proclaim that, “I am what I am, and what I am needs no excuses!” Or in this case, “I step out of the
ordinary, I can feel my soul ascending, I’m on my way, can’t stop me now!”

I thought over this month I would present the videos of some of my very favorites. I will start with Heather Small’s “Proud.” What do you think? And what are some of your favorites.

Happy Pride!

Heather Small

I look into the window of my mind
Reflections of the fears I know I’ve left behind
I step out of the ordinary
I can feel my soul ascending
I’m on my way
Can’t stop me now
And you can do the same (yeah)  Continue reading
