A Lot is Happening ~ A Long Due Update

Hello all! I am sitting here this morning in the tiny town of Brookfield, MO, my husband’s hometown. It is a family reunion of sorts. I am stunned I have managed to get Internet access. So I am hoping on here quick to report some news.

First, in case you didn’t know it, the anthology “Men of Steel” with my story “Meant to Fly” has been released. I am so excited. There was a release party over the weekend…

AND!! … today Elin Gregory posted a gorgeous feature on the release of the book plus an interview with none other than moi!

The interview was so much fun and I would love to hear what you think (and so would she).

Please check them out! (make comments at her site!)

You can find the anthology by clicking right here (ebook and paperback!) and Elin Gregory’s stunningly gorgeous post by clicking right here

“Meant to Fly” is an important story to me and I am very happy about its release. I thought about dedicating it to my first boy-crush (when I too was a boy) but in case it did get back to him somehow, I didn’t want there to be any hurt. He was straight, alas. *heave sigh*

Here is what Dreamspinner Press has to say: Shazam! Who better to safeguard a man’s heart than a hero? Mr. Fantastic may be out there on a wing and a prayer, playing a Longshot, but a handsome He-Man has the power, courage, and derring-do to see his quest for true love through to the happy ending. For romance of superhero proportions, check out these Men of Steel.

In case you missed it, my 1920s time travel story “It Had to Be You” was accepted by DSP as well. This story was a doozy! OMG! I couldn’t write three paragraphs without having to do research. My bibliography is two pages at the back of the story. It was tons of work and I can’t say I would ever rush to do a period piece again, but I love the story so much. It says a lot about culture, how times never really change, and what really matters above all things is love.

I had to be all top secret about the story, but now I can tell you more. Here is a brief description…

It Had to Be You by B.G. Thomas

Robert Daniels is always dating the wrong guys. He doesn\’t understand it. He has such nice friends. Then, one day, on a particularly bad date, he gets shot and dies…

…only to wake up in the body of a man named Jimmy, who was also shot and killed—in 1927. Along comes Hugh Naylor, who is in love with Jimmy. Now Robert’s falling in love with Hugh, but how can he explain he isn’t who he appears?

And what about the people who shot “Jimmy” in the first place? Is Rob still endanger for sins he didn’t commit? And will this place Hugh in jeopardy as well?

It will be available in June. BUT, if you order now, you can get all thirty stories for a staggering savings!

Dreamspinner Press is also interested in my novels. Right now I am busy at work on a zooming deadline with my very first novel! They like the idea, a lot, so here is hopeing they will like it when they read it. I am very happy with the direction it is going. A romantic comedy. I haven’t really done that before and I hope people will think it is even half as funny and romantic as I do.

Finally – and this is exciting too! – the anthology “Two Tickets to Paradise” with my story “New Lease” got an excellent review over at Top 2 Bottom Reviews. Every story, including mine, got a good review. Michelel Montgomery, the reviewer, said this about “New Lease”:

I really liked this story a lot. I felt sorry for Wade and hoped that he would find someone who really cared about him. Both Wade and Kent are honorable men who are both interesting and easy to like. I enjoyed the promise of a bright future for them and will be looking for more books by this author in the future.

WOW! She will be checking for my stories in the future! This makes me so happy!

Check out the whole review by clicking right here. It is really a nice one. Five stars for an antology!

Well, I am worried I will lose that Internet connection here in Mayberry Brookfield, so I better sign off. Until next time…

Cover for “Men of Steel” Released!

So I got the official cover from Julianne Bentley. It really surprised me. It is nothing like I expected. Nothing at all. I was expecting the typical M/M cover with a twist. You know, close-up on rippling torsos all crushed together, but with costumes. And that isn’t what it is.

Does that mean I don’t like it?

Great Scott! No! Not for a minute!

As I said in a few earlier posts about this story, I was a comic book collector for many, many years. I originally got into them because I had this passionate crush on a boy. Don’t worry I was a boy too, this isn’t anything squickie. We were both about fourteen or so, maybe a year younger, and I was SO hot for him but was too naïve to know it. He liked Spider-Man and let me read some of his books and I liked them. It wasn’t just to get close to him.

But it made us good friends. We started writing and drawing our own comic books. Then years later when I was trying to be heterosexual (as heterosexual as I could be, which wasn’t too much) I was with this woman and we used to play these role-playing games like D&D but it was about heroes instead. Between the two, I had had these superheroes in my head for between twenty-five and thirty and more years and a few of them finally made it to the written page and SOLD!

All of this was a side step and I want to get back to the cover. See, collecting those comic books for so many years makes it so I know comic book covers like you wouldn’t believe. The layouts. They way they are done. The title locations. The fonts used. The colors. And so much more.

And I tell you the cover for Men of Steel is a very clever comic books cover. And it took me a bit to get the little joke! Notice the hero in reflected in the glasses is taking off his shirt to reveal his costume? What do you bet he is going to take off a lot more than that? Just look at the grin on the face of the man with the glasses!

I am really really proud of this story. It has a very special meaning to me. And I hope you will check it out when it is released. And remember! This anthology will also be in paperback!

I can’t wait to see my copy!

Love to you all!

Super News! Another Sale and This One Means A LOT To Me!

I am so excited. I just sold my 14th story in the less than two years since I started submitting my writing.

And this one really means a lot to me. Many many many moons ago, my first boycrush, where I started figuring out I was gay, hooked me on Marvel Comics. I was in Jr High School. As the years passed, my superhero obsession grew, as well as my feelings for that boy.

He was an amazing artist but couldn’t write to save his life. I loved to tell stories but was only a step or two above stick figures. So we created our own comic books and superheroes.

When I was finally able to tell him how I felt, it went the same way as it so often does in reality to gay men. I was rejected. Big time. HUGE HURT. Lots of crying.

But that is a part of life. Now many years later I am on year eleven with my man, something I would never have thought possible that night crying in my room. I have never been able to figure out what happened to my boyhood crush, but I think I have many years to come with my husband.

And what’s more, I owe that boy a world of superheroes. While I finally stopped collecting about ten years ago due to so many things, I still adore comic books. And when a call for submissions went out from Dreamspinner Press for a new anthology called Men of Steel asking for stories about gay superheroes, I had to jump on board.

The main character is not one that me and that boyhood friend made up, but some of the back-up characters are. My tale is about Paragon, the ultimate man, who is invulnerable, can fly, throw tanks as if they were pillows, and of course, gay. And did I say “invulnerable?” Well that isn’t exactly true. Because his heart is vulnerable big time.

This story was a joy to write and it was with great trepidation that I awaited to see if it would sell. I understand the editor got quite a few submissions.

Today. I am home sick with a head cold and sleeping and resting and coughing and blowing my nose and just not feeling all that hot. Then I get the email…

Dear BG,

Congratulations – Dreamspinner Press would like to include your story, “Meant to Fly”, in the “Men of Steel” anthology.

Thanks again for your submission, and I hope you’re having a fantastic new year!

PS – *huge hugs* 🙂

Needless to say, I am insanely thrilled.

Such good, good news.

AND New Lease is about to be released in Two Tickets to Paradise as well. Both anthologies will be in paperback!!

*does a dance*

This means I get to hold it in my hands! Point! Say, “This is me!”

Feeling pretty good for feeling so bad today!

Thanks again to DSP!

Namasté to you all,

PS: I don’t want to forget to thank clmiles, essayel and wrjones for the FAST edits they had to do. I couldn’t have done it without them. Thanks guys!
